BRAKE SYSTEMS DIAGNOSTIC GUIDE

POTENTIAL CONDITION/CAUSE ACTION (SERVICE MANUAL SECTION)

Slack adjuster not functioning properly:

• Bushing worn  Replace bushing (3,6)

• Spline damaged  Replace slack adjuster (3,6)

• Worn or damaged internal parts  Replace slack adjuster (3,6)

• Incorrect slack window (auto slacks)  Install correct window (3,6)

Overadjustment/underadjustment:

• Contamination of internal parts (auto slacks)  Replace slack adjuster (3,6)

• False feedback to slack adjuster due to degraded  Replace bad foundation brake component

foundation brake components (see below)

• Severely glazed or worn linings  Replace linings (5)

Degraded foundation brake components:

• Grease or oil on linings  Replace linings (5)

• Flat spots on cam or rollers  Replace cam or roller (3,6)

Camshaft bushings binding:

• lacks lubricant  Lubricate bushings

• Stretched shoe  Replace shoe (3,6)

• Other broken or bent parts  Replace damaged parts as required (3,6)

• Performing downgrade braking using light drag  Use snub method on downgrades
